As the weather turns cooler, I find my cart loaded up with roasts. Bottom Round roast cooked in the crockpot with potatoes and carrots is a family favorite. This week check out Beef Stew meats and Pork butt roast too.
I come from a family of Roast-a-holics. So finding ways to budget our meals becomes key. First, buy on sale. This week they have some of my favorite roasts marked down. Just in time! Then, file a meat rebate. Get the form fist, then decide how to split up your meat tickets.
You can easily freeze your roasts in portions you will use. If you are having a difficult time with getting the right size for your crock pot, ask the meat man! I often find it difficult to get a cut to put in my crockpot-Oval shaped 5 quart cooker. So I often ask them to root around to find the ones that fit my cookware.
You can also pick out any larger roast and have it cut at the store. I’ve even asked them to “Cut it lengthwise” for easier fits. I’ve had the huge pork butt roast cut into 4ths for easy meal prep. These roast are wonderful. For ways to cook them, check out some of Sandra Lee’s “Semi Homemade” recipes. She’s fantastic with crockpot roasts.
Last year when turkeys were on sale, I could not find one to fit my vintage roasting pan. A fellow shopper was having her frozen turkey cut down the middle. She bakes half at a time. Wonderful way to save money when turkey goes on sale.
If you visit my house, you can check out my refrigerator freezer. I keep one plastic sterilite container in the freezer at all times marked “Crock Pot.” Inside I put leftovers of carrots, potatoes, corn off the cob, green beans, anything I think could be good thrown in the crockpot.
Use your coupons to add flavor to any crock pot dish. You can usually find Lawry’s seasoning mixes, McCormick, and Good Seasons. You can also look for coupon matches to cheap ways to sweeten your roasts like dried fruit, or applesauce. Look for Welch’s, or Sunmaid fruits. If you have trouble finding them, look near canned fruit.
Finally, save more with your leftovers. My Wednesday roast may be found in Friday Manwich, or in Sunday chili. We never throw out the roast fixins. They can be used in sandwiches, other soups or just plain warmed up in the microwave.

In class this week, one lady raised her hand to mention she never gets the max card top shopper coupons in the mail. This is a coupon that is generated when you shop our stores often. Meaning, scan that max card! The more you scan , the more you are ensured to get the coupons. It is not based upon spending-but scans.
We discovered, that the customer had moved a few years ago but did not update her max card address. Yikes, the new residents have been getting her rewards. If you have not updated your max card in a few years, you should do it now. You can do that one of two ways. Easiest is to go online to MyCountyMareket.com and click the “Update my Max Card” link. It’s right on the home page. There is also an updated email space which wasn’t around back when I got my first card.
There are also promotional opportunities with the max card. Like the VIP rewards we got last month. Yes! I’d love to save another 5% on my total shopping just for scanning my card when I shop. These types of rewards are generated for various things you do or buy. Most promotions have a 6 week window and can save you some extra bucks.
One of my club ladies told me she was worried about the store knowing what she was buying. So I talked to the Max card guy. He was very funny, he said that he has NEVER ran an individual history on a shopper. They are only looking for mass trends that can help the store provide a good overall picture of their customers. Little did I know that when I scan, they can tell that the shoppers in my store want to see more honey mustard flavored snacks, and that the shoppers in another market would prefer hot and spicy flavor. They also see patterns that help them to predict supply needs.
There is no personal match up to your Max card and the coupons you are using. There is no personal match to your penny pinchers.
One more benefit, should you lose your keys, and they are dropped in any postal mail slot we will get them. You should have seen the key pile last week-it was a doosey.

Getting your coupons redeemed may sound like a simple task, but actually finding an easy way to get the to the register takes some practice. There are many ways to keep yourself organized. This week I watched as we had our sale day to see how folks who were new to couponing were handling their carts. Here is some advice for those of you who were stugging just a bit.
First, I try to make sure I have a special place for any coupon that matches an item I have placed in the cart. That is the “redemption pile.” Some ideas include a special envelope, one dedicated section of your wallet organizer, or file, or even a pouch that fits inside your coupon binder.
I place my coupons vertical so that they stick up as I’m shopping around the store. Then when I arrive at the register I just pull the section out and line up the bar codes for Debbie (my adopted and lovable "Favorite" cashier).
I’ve seen a simple system of a Ziploc bag and a clothespin. I've seen a complex three fold out trapper keeper that would make middle school kids cry with envy. Anything to have a special place that has a secure closure will be good. Keep them all within reach of the child seat area.
Next you have to be sure you are including any extra coupons. Like your FREE milk receipt, or VIP reward coupons. Those should automatically go in your redemption pile when you are given the receipt. For example, you shop on 9/7 get a 5% Discount receipt, place it right away in your next week’s redemption section.
Catalina rewards should also automatically go from register to redemption pile. You can put a little note in here about what catalina’s are running next on your list of things to buy so you remember to pick them up while doing your shopping.
Here are some things I have seen go on in the store that do not work out so well for redemption. Things NOT to do:
Place each coupon on top of the item while riding in the cart. The air movement will blow them around, and you’ll lose your coupons.
Keep a fist full of coupons. These get all crumply and wrinkled. You may even tear one while shopping. The only coupons in your hand should be items you are looking for, but have not made it to your cart yet.
Place coupons under one heavy item in the cart. Although this will keep them from flying around, they still get lost in the cart and sometimes in random aisles.
