Coupons Vs. Store Brands

When someone finds out that I teach classes about saving money with coupons, I always get asked, “Can’t you just buy generic brands and save more?”  Customers assume the Store brands are always less money.  That’s not the case.  Especially to an avid coupon user.

Coupons are the top brand name’s way of allowing their price to be less than the store brand.  Many times I can pick up dairy products, canned goods, and snack foods for less than the store brand.  Most coupons these days are good for $.50 per purchase (or items bought).  Some coupons are good up to $2!

Here’s an example:  Mario Olives were on sale a week ago.  The sale price was $1.25, the store brand price was $1.09.  I had a coupon for $.50 on 1 to redeem. My final was $.75 saving me $.34 over the store brand.  This is a simple case of saving on the top brand over the Store brand.  Obviously the name brand olives are a better deal.  Look for coupons next week from Mario that actually provide you an overage.

Sometimes the store brand is much less expensive.  That’s where using your VALUE system comes into play.  I often purchase County Market Store bread.  My kids eat peanut butter sandwiches for snacks and often my 9 year old will leave the bread tie off the  bag.  It becomes an automatic that by the time we’re at the end of the bag, it’s been exposed to air and needs to be tossed. So I choose to purchase a less expensive bread over the Sara Lee Honey baked bread, even though I personally love the honey wheat!  For my own favorites, I use a coupon and keep the bread out of her reach.

You may find that some of the store brands taste exactly the same as top name brands, and you may make a decision that the store brand is not up to your VALUE standards.  Keep track!  Put a note in your price book inside your coupon organizer.  If you actively track your preferences you’ll feel better about making the decision when the time comes.

Watch for ingredients needed.  Some generics or store brand items will require  milk, eggs, or even other ingredients.  When combining those items, your cost per purchase may sneak up.  Always check what needs to be added before buying.

Penny Pinchers at County Market

The best way to save extra money, is to match up a Store Coupon to a Manufacturer’s coupon on every item purchased.  The only problem is finding enough Store Coupons and Manufacturer’s coupons to match!

Each month we issue a coupon booklet at County Market/Cub for items that are deeply discounted.  It’s our monthly Penny Pincher booklet.  We want you to find a manufacturer’s coupon to match.  These booklets come out around the 3rd week of each month.  They are delivered by direct mail.  Your postal delivery person will be able to tell you which day the coupons are arriving to your mailbox.

Stores do not get lots of extra copies of the Penny Pincher booklets.  Part of the contracts made with the vendors featured in the Penny Pinchers is that they issue all booklet by direct mail, and one per household.  Likewise, your postal person is not allowed to hand you extra copies.  However, we do trade may Penny Pincher coupons at our local club.

When you use your Penny Pincher coupon, the deduction or price adjustment is scanned off of a store barcode.  That will only happen for the number of items that the coupon limits.  For example, if it says, Limit 2, but you buy 5, 2 will be discounted, the registers will automatically charge full price for the other 3 items.

These coupon discounts are set PER TRANSACTION.  I’m often asked about the usage of multiple Penny Pinchers.  Yes, if you shop another day, with  a duplicate Penny Pincher, it will clear to your purchase without any problems.

We do have a place in our store for swapping coupons.  Our members will trade Pennies amongst themselves.  I often want extra kids foods, and Other members want some of the cleaning supplies I do not plan to use.  We are allowed to trade them at club, or place extra coupons in our swap bins.

Printing Tips for Grocery Shopping

Printed internet coupons account for 15% of all coupons redeemed.  Newspaper accounts for the largest share of 60%.  Yet the printed coupons get the most scrutiny when you check out.

There are four standard coupon printers on the internet.  These are coupons.com, which print “Bricks” coupons, Smartsource.com coupons which use Java Script, Redplum.com, and Couponnetwork.com   All of these sites allow you to print each coupon 2x.  The limit is per computer.  Sometimes a customer may trade with others to acquire more coupons, or companies like Kelloggs who work with coupons.com to use their bricks software offer multiples of the same coupon to allow the customer multiple coupons to redeem.  A vast majority, only allow the 2 prints per computer.

We gladly accept printed coupons at our registers so long as they meet basic criteria.  The coupons need to be printed with the standard watermark.  The watermark is printed lightly behind the price of the redemption.  Sometimes it’s a picture of the item, others it’s a company logo.

The watermark is the one thing all cashiers look for when accepting these coupons.  They are ensuring that the coupons have not been photocopied.  Photocopied coupons are illegal, and the store is not reimbursed for those coupons.

Most coupon fraud involves a person altering a coupon to change the amount offered.  Usually the use of a color copier and scanner are in play.  The easiest way to detect the photo copy, is to look for the watermark.  Swapping upc codes will also not scan properly when you check out.  That becomes the first red flag for the cashier.  The watermark  missing is the second.

This week, I’m messing things up!  It’s not illegal for a company to offer a coupon and opt not to pay for services like the bricks software.  These companies are few.  Here are the regular offers:

Prairie Farms Printable coupon

· Blue Bunny Ice Scream

· Curex bandages

Prairie Farms always keep their coupons posted.  They offer 9 each six month period.  You can print as many as you want of these, and use as many as you intend to purchase.  I often print extras for our coupon group to share.  These coupons scan easily.
