Coupons Aint What They Used to Be

Are you clicking?  You should be.  This program is changing shopping.  It's easy, no scissors necessary.  Once you have the My County Market App rolling, add Ibotta to your shopping clicks.  It's a nationwide rebate program when you can clip even more offers that you paid on Paypal.  It also works with your max card so no hassles for you.  Just see their offers, click and get money.

 This past weekend I was looking for deals on my phone and found the best deals on My County Market App.  I picked up several dollars with just a simple click.  $1 on CM brand sugar, $1 on CM bottled water, $1 on Essential Everyday cereal.  You get the idea.  It's a simple app to use.  You get offers on products you normally buy, and several items you can consider buying.  Click the ones you want and they are automatically applied to your max card. To get rolling with extra app coupons follow these steps:

1.  Download the My County Market App onto your phone. 

2.  It will ask you to confirm your email and Max card.  You can just snap a pic of your max card when it asks you for it.  Be sure these are correct!  It's how they ties to your max card shopping.
3.  Click some offers and have them in your virtual wallet.
4.  Shop at the store and pick up the items in your virtual shopping list.
5.  Get money!  As you buy things, then scan your max card it automatically will post to your account.  Next time you shop, you'll have $dollars off your order to redeem from your phone.

It's really easy to do.  I love the fact that I can pick up name brand coupons that are not available on coupons.com or smartsource, like Pepsi, Frito Lay, Campbells, and County Market store brand staples.

I picked up $10 just for signing up with Ibotta on my phone.  Boom!  Direct to my paypal account.  Then I picked up some Pillsbury offers, $.50 on any bread, $.25 on any bananas, and $1 on milk,  for extra this week.  These are in addition to your weekly totals, and YES you can still add printed or newspaper coupons to your order.  How cool is that?

How to Build a Coupon Stash

As I was looking into the week's upcoming sales, I found myself wanting a few coupons I did not have in my coupon stash.  I immediately turned to clipping services for help.  The clipping services acquire large numbers of all newspaper coupons and can mail them out to you when you see a really hot match up pop up.  First, let's explain how I knew I'd need a clipping service. 
The ad is ready on Wednesday and is good for one full week.  This week, we have Bush's Grilling Beans on sale for $.99  Wholly smokes, that's $.69 off regular everyday price.  It's a good deal to stock up without coupons.  Yet knowing we love having a few cans of the Steakhouse recipe in the cabinet my HOT LIST search jumped into high gear.  I check the cabinet, and we have two cans "in stock." Now I just need to do some planning and ordering.

We generally fix Bush's Grillin Beans when we grill out.  We've got 10-12 more good grill nights this fall for meals.  So now I know we're looking for 8 minimum items to purchase.  I need 8 coupons to match up. An August Smart Source issued a $1 on 2 coupon on BGB that is valid this week.  Next I just needed to order from a clipping service who has enough coupons in stock and will ship today.  If it ships the day I order, I will have them in plenty of time to use with the sale. 

Today, I ordered from  Coupon Stockpile.  I've used several services over the years.  Most all operate the same, they list the coupons they have and charge a small handling fee.  It's a good idea to shop around for any food coupons you'd like multiples of in the same order.  Handling fees are pretty reasonable, but no need to pay shipping twice!  I ended up typing in some key words into the search bar for other name brands that I knew were on my HOT LIST.  Things like Kelloggs Pop Tarts, Ragu, Frigo, and Old El Paso.  Just the items I knew I'd be buying.  Sure enough, coupons were available for $.08. and the Ragu coupons were $1 on 1, so I would net out $.92 per item when purchased.  

Now as the sales roll in, and the coupons are in hand I can save money at the store.  This week, I'm buying 8 can's of Bush's Grilling Beans for $.49 each as opposed to the regular price of $1.69  That's a savings of 71% This is well above my savings goal for any HOT LIST stockpile item.  

Everyone has a HOT LIST.  It's those items your family likes to purchase.  If you're wondering what those items are, just look at your last three grocery receipts.  Jot down which items you purchase over and over on a regular basis.  71% savings on these items can save you a lot of money this year.  Keep collecting your receipts until you have a clear picture of what your family likes to buy.

Have you decided to start couponing?  Do you want to save money on your grocery bill every time you shop?  Good!  You're in the right place.  Saving money is about deciding to save money.  Everyone can do it and everyone can do it well.  All you have to do, is make up your mind to save on a regular basis. 

The first step to good coupon saving is MAKING A MATCH. You will hear coupon users talk about matching up sales to coupons all the time.  It means that you follow the sale discounts, and then add a manufacturer's discount to the sale item price.  This gives you two discounts on one product. 

At County Market we give you many tools to make matches easier.  We offer store issued Penny Pinchers 48 out of 52 weeks per year.  You can almost always get a Penny Pincher coupon when you shop.  A Penny Pincher booklet of coupons is available for free at Customer Service.  

We also offer you free manufacturer coupons on your phone.  The My County Market App is free, and can be used on your phone, or you can log in on your home computer and get free coupons there too.  These are manufacturer coupons you can clip with your finger.  This is a fast and free service that every shopper can use every day of the year

Yo may be wondering if it's worth it.  It is worth it!  There are hundreds of offers on apps like Ibotta for products you purchase each week.  HUNDREDS.  Your My County Market App has items that are not commonly found on traditional coupon sites.  Look for produce coupons on both apps. I've saved on tomatoes, bananas, even garlic.  I have been buying salad kits for the family weekly off the County Market app. You definitely can save extra money with the apps, no doubt about it.

You'll need to establish this habit so that it becomes part of your routine.  To do this, you need to connect it with another habit you already have established.  For example, is there a habit you have on Wednesday that allows you a few minutes to prep your phone?  For me, it's Wednesday morning after the kids are set to school.  I have a window of about 20 minutes before my day begins.  This is when I make a cup of coffee and check my daily to do list.  This is already my routine, so I'm going to tie this new behavior to an old one.

After coffee, and with my to do list review, I will click on the apps and put digital coupons in my wallet.  It will only take a couple minutes, but it will be set before I reach the store.  That's it!  It's on Wednesday, the first day of shopping week, and when offers are renewed.  It fits with my already scheduled routine.  And, it will save me money and become a new habit.   Wednesday is your best bet for establishing a new savings habit.  Try to find an already existing habit on this day you do every week.  Look for habits like picking up  kids from soccer practice, lunch plans, favorite TV show schedule.  Before you know it, your app shopping will be second nature.

Save Money. Save Time.

So you want to be a coupon shopper!  Great!  One of the questions I get a lot about coupon shopping is, "How long does it take?" A lot of that answer depends on how fast you learn, and how much time you actually have to dedicate to coupons.  You can start with a hour a week, or go full in and spend five hours a week looking for deals.  My suggestion is to keep it simple and get faster as you learn the tips.

Many new couponers spend a lot of time clipping coupons they will never use.  All that time adds up to dirty dishes, unfolded laundry, and TV shows missed!  You can streamline the time spent sorting and cutting pretty easily.  You don't have to clip coupons you will not be using!

Here is what I do each week:

On Tuesday mornings, I find 15 minutes to check the weekly sale a day early.  This extra day allows me to order any special coupons I want for the week.  It also allows me to print coupons before everyone else looks at their store lists.  I go to My County Market Weekly Sales.  It is posted by 9am on Tuesdays.

Step 2:  I print coupons off all my favorite cheap and easy sites.  These include Coupons.com PrairieFarms.com Bettycrocker.com Campbells.com Kelloggs.com  These are the standard sites with the most coupons.

Step 3:  I go to any sites that have a sale item that I think sometimes has coupons, like Arm & Hammer P&G Old Orchard Coffeemate

Step 4:  Get your phone or laptop out and "Clip" all the digital offers from County Market.  It's free, and you will have them clipped and ready even if you change your mind about buying those items in store.  If in doubt, just clip it!  It's free and doesn't make a mess.

Step 5:  I start looking at Hot Coupon World database for any coupons I may have missed.  I type in any food item I want a coupon for and see if it's listed in newspaper coupons.

***This is a time saver:  If it lists a newspaper insert coupon, look at the date of issue, then pull the insert out of your insert pile and cut it.  Don't cut every coupon all the time.  Just when you need it. no more spending an hour a week cutting coupons you will never use.

Step 6:  While looking at the inserts, if there is an item I want go ahead and cut it.  I know I'll use it before expiration. If in doubt, leave it in the pile.  You can always go back and search by date for the coupon you want and clip it later.

Step 7:  Put these coupons with my Penny Pinchers organized by layout of the store.  In My store:  Produce, branded Meat, condiments, canned veg, ethnic foods, baking, cereal, cleaning, dairy, breads, frozen.  Pretty simple.

These steps will help you to not get caught up in the time trap.  Don't clip what you won't use.  Don't have 200 extra coupons in hand while shopping, and Don't worry about missing 1 coupon.  Grab the main deals each week and be happy saving dollars and not pennies.

We're Going Camping!

When I tell people I coupon shop, they tend to think only of regular weekly shopping trips.  Sometimes, there are special trips I make that have to do with our lifestyle.  Traveling and Camping is something we do.  We travel all across the country in our RV, and camp for pennies on the dollar.  We fix breakfast, pack lunches, and grill dinners in many state parks.  We've stayed in Washington DC, Virginia Beach, Yellowstone park, Grand Teton, and Gulf Shores Alabama.  Right now we're planning to swing down to Tennessee and do a 10 day waterfalls tour.  To be followed up by the ultimate waterfall tour next month in Niagara Falls NY.

One thing all these trips have in common is a tight budget and savings plan.  My grocery shopping is part of our trip planning.  I start weeks before a trip and add any sale and coupon items to a special box in my family room.  It is full of things we need for less to "Party up" along our travels.  It may be a pasta kit, or Hershey's chocolate bars, it might have jello cups, or paper goods in the box.  Anything that is on my final prep list that I can buy ahead of time and save money.

Here's my list.  I don't often share my family exact shopping lists, but this one will show you how I plan out convenient foods.  All these items either can go in the  cooler, rv fridge, or rv shelves.  It's a simple grocery buy that typically lasts for a 10 day trip.  Take all your coupons!  Digital phone coupons, newspaper, printable coupons and some ibotta rebates.  They all will help you get everything on this list for the exact same budget as your normal weekly shopping.  Hope this helps you to plan a trip for your own family faster and cheaper.
