Cookin With Coupons

Happy Valentines Day!  It's one of those great shopping days that make me feel good.  Today I saved $80 with coupons.  I bought all kinds of things, like breakfast foods: Cereal, bacon, orange juice, and pancake mix.  I also picked up seasoning mixes, taco fixin's and good stock items like egg noodles and frozen veggies.  With all my huge coupon savings, I can now save money on a dinner "Out" with the family for Valentines Day.

Here' my plan, I saved $80 SOLID, coupon dollars.  Not sales, actual coupons.   Every item I picked up is something my family will use.  So it's to the bottom line savings.  That means I have an extra $80 to prepare a really nice at home meal that is still far less than taking my family of 5 out to a restaurant. 

Here are my Sweetheart meal plans:  If it's too late to duplicate for tonight you can do this over the weekend for a change of pace for the family.

Main Entree:  Steaks!  I picked up bacon wrapped filets.  Yes..the super duper expensive ones.  No, I did not have a coupon :(  My plans are to use the Ruth Cris Steakhouse instructions to prepare them on  a hot pan with butter under the steaks.  Set on Broil, time each side to 4 minutes.  The pat of butter goes under the steak while cooking. 

Side:  Huge salad.  My kids love helping prepare the salad.  I used my Penny Pincher coupon to pick up one head of lettuce for $.69, then I'm mixing it with a bag of Dole Italian blend.  It will give us penty for the whole family at a good price.  I have fresh tomato, Sargento Italian cheese, Hormel real bacon toppings, and Texas Toast croutons.  I'll top with a variety of salad dressing, each member using their favorite.

Side:  Have you noticed the changes in bread?  The Hostess closing has really changed our bread selections.  I noticed something new in my store, we now have a store brand Texas Toast sliced bread.  I use to love a good garlic sprinkled toast when I was a kid.  So I bought a loaf that I can butter and sprinkle a little garlic powder and parsely on.  Toast it on a cookie sheet in the oven, flip sides after about 3 minutes for a nice golden bread, Do this BEFORE you prepare the steaks at a lower setting.

Side: Loaded baked potatoes.  The big huge potatoes are on sale for$.69 per pound.  Pick up some Nacho cheese and taco flavored cheese by Sargento, add sour cream from Prairie Farms, and fresh steamed broccoli from Green Giant.  Love these baked beauties. 

Drinks:  Yes, I picked up marcino cherries and gingerale.  We're celebrating with a cute Shirley Temple.  

Dessert:  Really?  Do you have any room?  We have Pillsbury cake mix in our Penny Pincher.  Make some cupcakes with the kids for a sweet after dinner treat. 


Total meal for family of 5:   $48.00  Far less than dinner out, and I don't have to wait in line.  It's a big night splurge for our family, but easily covered with my weekly coupon savings.

Save On Your Way

Living in the Midwest, we take driving for granted. Almost everyone has a car, and we drive everywhere we go. Part of my personal news years resolution was to save as much on my other expenses as I do at County Market, aka 50%. Of course one of the first things that popped out on my bank statement was GAS. Back in the day (2010), couponers would shop multiple stores to save money by splitting their weekly grocery buy to get the rock bottom prices on every item for the week. IT made sense, because driving between stores only cost about $.25 per trip. Yet, that was when gas was around $1.50 per gallon. Times have changed, and so has shopping.


Since I can’t control the price, I needed to look at some ways to combine grocery savings and gas savings. Step #1 was to find out how I was burning up so much gas. To do this, I started to break down my weekly gas purchase. In January I put 18 gallons of gas in the van. In week #1 I ran out of gas in less than a week. Yikes. I was using more than 18 gallons per week and wanted to slice that expense. I could quite driving, or drive smarter.

 Step #2 came shortly after. I started keeping a daily odometer log of how many miles I was traveling and where I was going. This was my “Oh I see what’s happening” moment. Although on my running errands day, I thought I was being frugal, I was actually burning up my savings driving all around town for my deals. I hit the locations as to what I was shopping for more than working in one route.

Step #3 After my second week of recording miles driven and locations on my errands list, I mapped myself. I was driving the long way to locations. Somehow, by looking at my routes, I managed to find some less hectic routes, that got me to my destination in less time and with less gas. How much less? In week #3 I saved a whole $6 by traveling to my same destinations, but by different routes. Step #4 I started cutting out places I would go, that were non essential. A good example was my weekly stop for lunch after leaving coupon club. I found a closer fast food, and picked up a $.50 soda out of the machine after leaving the store. Wow, that’s another $3 per week.

 Step #5 That got me to thinking about all the coupon users I know who do the Route to savings. They hit 6 stores per week to save $3 at each. Is it worth the drive and the gas? I’ve implemented a new rule for my minivan. If I can’t save at least $5 on the items in the cart, I can’t pay for the time and gas to drive to get the deal. Not only that. I need to be really sure I am saving. Now I’m into week #5. I’ve managed to get down to around 20 gallons per week. I stopped idling the car if I’ll be sitting longer than 30 seconds (self appointed experts online seem to think that saves money...so far I can’t argue).

I’ve consolidated my shopping and limited myself to 3 stores per week, or saved $7.50 spent driving to do my shopping. What do you know….that’s the price of a couple gallons of milk. To me, I’ve found a way to cover my Milk buys in 2013 and I’m not missing out on any deals by driving all around.

Cookin With Coupons

We have been busy this week building a Pinterest page for all our Cookin's with Coupons ideas.  Please join us there for LOTS of recipe ideas that are easy on the budget, and a few that just taste fabulous!  

You'll also find some good organization tips.  I like a well organized stockpile of coupon staples at my fingertips.  That sometimes requires some solutions for organizing.  I'll be sharing those as pins as well.  

This week, we have some good in store special on our brands, and we have some coupons in our ad.  Try these ideas to make the most of sale items:

Recipe #1  Cold Lunch Special
Do you remember when the teacher would ask you, "Hot lunch or Cold lunch?"  It always implied Cold was yucky and undesirable.  Not in my household!  I'm often home alone for lunch and I've decided I want to enjoy a quick bite to eat just like going out!  This week we have Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh combos on sale.  Try picking up a Brown Sugar Ham, and a loaf of Artisian bread from our deli.  A Focaccia,  or ciabatta will give you the grown up feeling.  The ingredients will give you the flavor you are craving.  Here are some coupon staples you can pick up easy to make a lunch special:  Sliced pepperchini By Mt. Olive-use newspaper coupon to save $.75 on 1, Sliced thin Provolone by Sargento (20 slices per package is a good deal, look for the deli slice) -use newspaper coupon to save $.55 on 2, and  Plochman's sweet and spicy mustard-look for hangtags this week to save $.50 on 1, pick up some fresh tomato and red onion.  There re 3 good coupon savings to plus our own County Market coupon to save you money and give you a Yummy lunch.

Recipe #2 Picante and Pork Sandwiches
We've already picked up Pork Roast last week, and we picked up some Sargento Provolone above.  Now let's expand to an evening meal by preparing some interesting uncommon pork sandwiches.  In a saucepan mix 1 jar of Pace Picante sauce-use newspaper coupon to save $.75 on 1,  and 3 T of Honey Mustard by French's,.  Then add your left over Pork roast from last week.  Stir until warm and serve on hamburger buns.  Top with a fresh lettuce from your Penny Pincher coupon booklet and Provolone cheese.  This mean can easily feed the family for an easy weeknight dinner without a lot of fuss.
  
Recipe  #3  Garden Soup
In a pinch one night this week?  We have Del Monte Tomato on sale, pick up two cans of diced varieties, and 1 can of the Italian variety.  It will have the seasoning to make this soup taste great.  Add in 1 can of Freshlike Green beans, 1 can of Freshlike corn, and 1 can of Freshlike mixed veggies, on sale for a mere $.59.  Next add in 1 can of Hormel white breast chicken.  Simmer in the crockpot for a soup your family will think was all made from scratch.  Hide the cans, they will never know!
