The Department of Agriculture announced projected increases in basic food prices for 2014 at 3.5%. No big deal! Non coupon users may be freaking out over this news but I am calm. I’ll just go Coupon Onward. What I see happening in the next year, is that I will tighten up my budget, and plan to redeem 4 more coupons each week.
The basic food increases are on things like beef, pork, produce, and eggs. Those items typically are not couponed. So I’ll be looking at ways to pick up that 3.5% on other items in my cart. Here are several ways we can do this:
1. Follow the County Market sales religiously. Do not skip. When you skip, you miss a stock up opportunity. You do not have to buy a set amount weekly, but you do need to review the sales.
2. Do not plan to drop items from your basket. I do not feel that saving money means giving up anything. I want my cabinets just a full this year as last year. I just need to make sure I buy when I have a coupon match up. If anything, add to your basket to help you ward off fast food and convenience pick ups. For example, start packing a “Lunch” bag of snacks for short trips and soccer practice.
3. Look for add on discounts. Rebates, Penny Pinchers, Catalina rewards, and County market store promotions (like March’s Hoops).
4. Use your freezer to stock up on meats and cheese. Plan out how many ways you can use ground beef when it’s on sale, or how many meals can you make out of Pork loin?
5. Tackle cross over offers with zeal. If you see a discount for $1 off milk when buying 2 Keebler, stack the Keebler cookie coupons, and the liquor department $1 snacks coupons to really get a deal.
6. See the market! When prices go up, vendors get competitive. Only 3% of all shoppers use coupons, so 97% will put less in their basket. That will bring out some deals. Be ready to see those deals and capitalize on the deals.
7. Look high and low. You’ll often find price cuts in the reach area of the store. Also check out the clearance carts each week.
