2017: Healthier and Budget Friendly

Do new year's resolutions have you reviewing all aspects of your life?  Are you considering a new exercise program?  Are you quitting smoking?  Spending more time with a loved one?  Or are you planning to work more?  How about deciding to be healthier?  What about deciding to save more money?  Well if those last two ideas peeked your interest, you are in luck.  I too want to be healthier and save money.

2016 is here, and it's time to find ways to feed my family of five with healthier meals and snacks of high quality freshness  Many people do not know you can save money while buying fresh foods, healthy snacks and high quality organics  I do it all the time, and in the next year I plan to do even more  Join us as I share ways to save and be healthy with your grocery shopping.

1.  Use coupons!  There are websites for organic items.  Print these out on a regular basis and include them in your coupon stash.  Some of the best sites are:  Mambo SproutsSaving NaturallyOrganic DealsOrganicfoodcouponsHealthesavers,    You can also email companies direct and ask for coupons for products you wish to buy in 2016.

2.  Do some meal planning.  It helps when you know exactly what you will need this week to prepare meals and how you can best utilize the exact amounts your family wants.  Write it all down!  It's old fashioned, but it works. Writing your meal plan will keep you on track and help you sort out what you really need, versus the items you want.

3. Stop wasting food.  We over prepare many meals.  Take a look at your dinner table after your next meal. How much of the food is wasted?  If you only use half a jar of organic spaghetti sauce per meal, find a way to preserve the other half instead of fixing it all at once.  Your freezer is your friend.  Plus when you can use "Halves" of items you already have a meal planned for next week.

4.  Stock up on organic items when they are on sale.  It may seem simple, yet can save a bundle.  If you see your favorite brand of yogurt on sale, and it's shelf life lasts more than a week, buy it for the next few weeks.  You will see your savings add up.  All of a sudden you can find an additional $10 per week for pricey snack items like roasted almonds in your budget.

5.  Cut it up yourself.  If you want free range chicken, then do not pay extra for it already cut.   Get out your butcher knife and chop chop chop! The same applies to the produce department.  Celery and true peanut butter make a great health snack, but cut the celery sticks at home to save some money.

We'll be adding more ways to save and be healthier in 2016. These are the top 5 ways you can save and get your family fast tracked to a healthy and inexpensive new year.  Stay tuned to our blog all year.

Coupon with us in 2017

Savings habits are hard to establish. Hard like when you first decide to not order soft drinks in restaurants and order water to save a few dollars, or deciding to only fill your gas tank according to the gas app on your phone.  You will forget!  You'll be half way to filling your tank before you pull your phone out. Or your waitress will walk away to get your $2.56 drink before you can realize that for your family of 5, you just blew $13 on 60 ounces of "who cares".

It will take about 90 days to get to a point where you always remember to check your phone app before going to the grocery store.  We have spending habits that work the same as our savings habits.  Yet, this is the future of coupon clipping.  It's time to  serious about saving money with your phone and computer.  You will need to have your apps loaded and clipped so you can redeem all your digital dollars.

Yo may be wondering if it's worth it.  It is worth it!  There are hundreds of offers on apps like Ibotta for products you purchase each week.  HUNDREDS.  Your My County Market App has items that are not commonly found on traditional coupon sites.  Look for produce coupons on both apps. I've saved on tomatoes, bananas, even garlic.  I have been buying salad kits for the family weekly off the County Market app. You definitely can save extra money with the apps, no doubt about it.

You'll need to establish this habit so that it becomes part of your routine.  To do this, you need to connect it with another habit you already have established.  For example, is there a habit you have on Wednesday that allows you a few minutes to prep your phone?  For me, it's Wednesday morning after the kids are set to school.  I have a window of about 20 minutes before my day begins.  This is when I make a cup of coffee and check my daily to do list.  This is already my routine, so I'm going to tie this new behavior to an old one.

After coffee, and with my to do list review, I will click on the apps and put digital coupons in my wallet.  It will only take a couple minutes, but it will be set before I reach the store.  That's it!  It's on Wednesday, the first day of shopping week, and when offers are renewed.  It fits with my already scheduled routine.  And, it will save me money and become a new habit.

Wednesday is your best bet for establishing a new savings habit.  Try to find an already existing habit on this day you do every week.  Look for habits like picking up  kids from soccer practice, lunch plans, favorite TV show schedule.  Before you know it, your app shopping will be second nature.

Get Your FREE Coupons

One of the best things you can do to save yourself both time and money is to learn to use the free online coupon trading boards.  I use them frequently.  This week I picked up some great meat rebate forms and some fresh chicken coupons.  To use the boards, you'll need to create an ID for yourself and learn the terminology.  It's easy!

Some of my favorite trading boards include:

There are many terms used in Couponing.  To follow message boards and conduct trades you will need to know them.  Here are a few:
· MIR is a Mail in Rebate.  It can be for a new product offering, a satisfaction guarantee, or an alcoholic based rebate.
· OYNO = On Your Next Order
· OYNSO = On Your Next Shopping Order (Catalina coupon)
· TMF = Try Me Free
· FAR = Free After Rebate
· BLINKIES = In Store Smart Source Coupons.  These come in the little box with a blinking light.  They have sensors to issue a coupon based on movement.
· BOGO/B1G1 = Buy One Get One
· CATALINA = Coupon printed at register after purchased
· CRT = Customer Receipt Tape.  Usually required when filing a rebate.  Must have the address of the store, and date issued to be accepted.
· EB/ECB = Extra Care Bucks these are rewards offered by CVS.  Similar to Catalina’s at County Market yet offered as a Store Coupon.
· FAR = Free After Rebate
· GM = General Mills (Newspaper insert)
· MIR = Mail in Rebate

· OP = Out of Pocket
· PENNY PINCHER=County Market store coupons issued by mail monthly.  Look for them 3rd week of each month.
· P&G = Proctor & Gamble (Newspaper Insert)
· Peelie = Coupon you peel off package.  Mostly found on bags and in the frozen department.
· RP= Red Plum (Newspaper Insert)
· RR = Register Rewards.  These are offered at Walgreens only.  They are similar to Catalina’s offered at County Market, but are Manufacturer coupons, and therefore can be redeemed at our stores.
· RAINCHECK= When an item is on sale, and they run out of stock, you can ask for a raincheck at customer service to lock in your price so that you do not miss out on the deal.
· SS= Smart Source (Newspaper Insert)
· STACKING = Using stores allow multiple use of coupons – manufacturer’s & store coupons or rebates.
· PIGGYBACKING= using more than one stack to link a large group of items into one huge savings.
· TEAR PAD = A pad of coupons  near a product or on display.
· WYB= When You Buy

5 Incredible Phone Apps For Real Money

When it comes to saving money on your groceries, there's an app for that!  Most stores these days have apps that give you directions to local stores, or hours of operation.  But to actually save money with an app, you'll need the good ones.  Your phone can be full of apps that save you money.  Yet most people do not have the 5 best apps loaded and ready to go at any time.  These 5 will save you money and are easy to use.

1.   My County Market App It just makes sense right?  You shop at the store, why no use their app?  It has County Market's store brand coupons you can use each week, and coupons for brands not found on other apps like Pepsi, Frito and Produce.  As you select the offers you want, the savings are accumulated in the app when you scan your Max Card at the checkout lane.  Simple and it saves you real money.

2.  Ibotta app for rebates The rebate app and the coupon app work together.  You can use both (should they match up) on the purchase of one item.  Rebates are credited direct to the consumer's paypal account after you claim $20 in savings. Once you download this app, it will ask which store you wish to shop, click on County Market, and start gathering up the items you want to save money with.  That's it. Just select them.  Once you check out, it will auto read your Max Card and your money is added to your account. Simple.

3.  Retale App.   Start by using an app that gives you all the sales circulars weekly.   Retale includes all the local circulars, including County Market.  Never miss a deal by not having a newspaper in hand!

4.  Gas Buddy.     Don't overlook something simple as Gas Buddy.  It will let you know if its worth an extra mile to save $6 on a fill up.  Updated by consumers, and confirmed by consumers it often will save you $.20 to $.35 per gallon on gas.  Here's the kicker-you already have $.25 off gas coupon from County Market right?  Now use it at the best possible time.

5.  Checkout 51. It's very similar to Ibotta, but has slightly different offers.  It works the same way, but you take a photo of your receipt upon checkout.

These money savers can add some serious bucks to your year end savings.  Why wait?  Load them onto your phone now.  They are FREE!

The Best Coupons

Last week we discussed how to find good free Newspaper insert coupons.  This week we're going to open up and talk about finding the Best coupons.  The best coupons are high dollar, BOGO coupons and rebate forms.  They offer you a pretty good return for your time picking them up.  Here are some of my top secret tactics to keeping my coupon stash full of the Best coupons.

1.  Know what's out there.  It helps if you know what you're looking to find.  I use coupon databases and trade boards to let me know what's available.  For example, I purchased a turkey for Thanksgiving and although I picked it up at a good price, I want more!  So I went to Hot Coupon World and searched the word turkey.  Turns out I'm looking for a Heineken Turkey offer for $10 valid in Missouri (where I live).  So Next time I'm in Hannibal's County Market I'll be looking for  that form.

2.  Pick up coupons in the store!  Yes, you can pick them up to use at the time or a later date.  We ask that you do not take them all.  Some of the very best offers are Tearpad coupon offers you find in the grocery store.  Sometimes you'll find them hanging on displays mid aisle.  Other times you will find them at the customer service desk.  Our team knows I'm looking for coupons so they sometimes tell me they have new ones a the desk. Gather peelies, hangtags, tearpad and blinkie coupons every time you shop.

3.  Use online services for high dollar coupons you can not find in our area.  I admit, Florida and California get some pretty great coupons that never see the Midwest!  I use a service for inserts out of CA, and a clipping service in FL that offers high dollar rebates and tearpad coupons.  In the past I've signed up for mixed envelopes of coupons for a small price.  It's worth it!

4.  Look in the trash.  Yep. I ask for all the Catalinas at the registers when I shop.  "Hey do you have any Catalina's in the trash that other customers didn't want?"  There are always a few.  The best one on record was a Catalina reward for $10 on my next purchase, that the customer didn't want, and the cashier didn't know what it was.  Score!  I always look for those blue faced catalina coupons.  People just don't know what they are and end up tossing them.  They are dollars redeemable by anyone.

5.  Visit the liquor department.  Even if you do not buy liquor!  Some of my best coupon scores have been $2 on meat hangtags-NO alcohol purchase required!  Or picking up FREE 2 liter of soda purchase, limit one per transaction (I shopped a lot that month).  There are great food offers hanging around in the liquor department.

6.  Get on coupon trains. These are listed on sites like HCW,  A Full Cup, and other coupon sites.  They have members who will send you a trade envelope of mixed coupons they do not want, you then send one to them.  It works and costs you the price of a stamp.

If you desire to save real money, it takes some effort.  You'll find the best coupons save you the most money.  You can use all these resources for very small amounts of money.  Good Luck!

3 Crazy Steps to Better Coupon Shopping

Deciding to be a saver is tough.  But having a good strategy helps!

Strategy #1   Never shop without a plan. Impulse buying can wreck your grocery budget.  And never shop hungry!   It seems like a simple strategy and it works.  The plan starts with having a good idea of what your family needs to buy this week.  There are hundreds of phone apps for you to jot down notes. You may want to break down your plan into sections.  Buy this week, buy sometimes in the next few weeks, or buy sometime next month allows you to prioritize your purchases.  Then your plan should be matched up with the weekly sale ad.  If it's on sale and matches with any item on  your needs list then it becomes part of the buy plan.  If you are in doubt of what items should be on those lists, you should look at your past purchase history. This is simple, just pull your past few receipts and take a look at the things you have been buying.  Which would you purchase again?

Strategy #2  Only buy when stacking 2 or more deals.  Many extreme coupon shoppers only buy items when they know they are getting the absolute best deals.  Having an item on sale usually means that the item is discounted between 25-40% off regular retail.  If you stack another form of savings you can get into the 40-65% savings range.  That is where most coupon shoppers try to find their deals.  You can stack a sale item, with a coupon (store or manufacturer), with an app rebate, or with a by mail rebate.  If you use this strategy, you will need to keep a close eye on all types of stacking options.

Strategy #3  Shop during low peak hours and take your time.  This strategy keeps your impulses under control.  If you shop when there are is not a rush in the store you'll have more time to review your buying options.  Should you buy this item now, or wait for a potential sale next week?  If you are not rushed you can also think more clearly and do some meal planning as you shop.  A rushed shopper grabs more prepared meals, more convenience foods and more overall items.  A bag of 15 apples becomes easier to grab than picking your own 8 apples for the week.  Less waste, is money saved.

Finding FREE Coupons

We have seen a coupon shortage lately.  There have been fewer food coupons inside the newspaper inserts.  This causes some shortages in our coupon stash.  Finding more free coupons becomes a priority.  Here are some places to check for freebies:

1. Restaurants and coffee shops.  Ask the manager what happens to the coupon inserts after Sunday morning readings.  Usually at Starbucks, Panera Bread, Bob Evans, Country Kitchen types of restaurants customers buy a paper then bring it inside.  They are looking to pass the time, not coupon.  So the inserts are all left at the restaurant.  It’s a good way to get multiple Sunday Papers without paying for them.

2. Nursing homes.  Many older folks want a paper service with their room.  Yet Many do not jump up out of their beds and start clipping the coupons.  Many papers are simply added to the home’s recycle bin immediately.

3. Recycle centers.  Many communities have  very large recycle bins for newspaper.  Some allow access some to not.  You’ll need to call your recycling center.  You can also try the smaller communities.  Collection bins that stay open for a weekend a month often have easy access and lots of unused good coupons.

4. Newspaper route carriers.  Let’s just say “They know a guy who knows a guy.”  Some are a wealth of coupons.

5.  Online Clipping Services!  These are not free, but often low cost.
There are hundreds more:  Simply search for "Coupon Clipping Service."

6.  Your neighborhood is a goldmine of unwanted coupons.  Check and see who is getting the Sunday paper and may not want the extra coupons.  Ask family members and neighbors if you can have their coupons.  The same is true for co workers, friends and fellow club members.

7.  Employers who get a regular daily delivery.  My husband's office has newspaper delivery.  Yet no one works on Sunday so on Monday, he swings by the break room and picks up free coupons for me.

Places to skip:
1. Convenience stores and sellers of papers.  When the carrier comes to collect the unsold papers, they check for inserts ad take those away.

2. Hotels.  They mostly have USA Today, and those do not get inserts on Sundays.

3. Self Standing machines.  Do not steal inserts from the machines.  It’s illegal and unethical.
Don’t forget the easy coupons.

Good Luck on your quest to find some freebie coupons.
