Store Brands Vs. Coupons

When someone finds out that I teach classes about saving money with coupons, I always get asked, “Can’t you just buy generic brands and save more?”  Customers assume the Store brands are always less money.  That’s not the case.  Especially to an avid coupon user. 
 Coupons are the top brand name’s way of allowing their price to be less than the store brand.  Many times I can pick up dairy products, canned goods, and snack foods for less than the store brand.  Most coupons these days are good for $.50 per purchase (or items bought).  Some coupons are good up to $2!
Here’s an example:  Mario Olives were on sale a week ago.  The sale price was $1.25, the store brand price was $1.09.  I had a coupon for $.50 on 1 to redeem. My final was $.75 saving me $.34 over the store brand.  This is a simple case of saving on the top brand over the Store brand.  Obviously the name brand olives are a better deal.  Look for coupons next week from Mario that actually provide you an overage.
Sometimes the store brand is much less expensive.  That’s where using your VALUE system comes into play.  I often purchase County Market Store bread.  My kids eat peanut butter sandwiches for snacks and often my 7 year old will leave the bread tie off the  bag.  It becomes an automatic that by the time we’re at the end of the bag, it’s been exposed to air and needs to be tossed. 
So I choose to purchase a less expensive bread over the Sara Lee Honey baked bread, even though I personally love the honey wheat!  For my own favorites, I use a coupon and keep the bread out of her reach.
You may find that some of the store brands taste exactly the same as top name brands, and you may make a decision that the store brand is not up to your VALUE standards.  Keep track!  Put a note in your price book inside your coupon organizer.  If you actively track your preferences you’ll feel better about making the decision when the time comes. 
Watch for ingredients needed.  Some generics or store brand items will require  milk, eggs, or even other ingredients.  When combining those items, your cost per purchase may sneak up.  Always check what needs to be added before buying.

Cookin with Coupons

Look at the grapes this week.  They are on sale, I'll be grabbing a couple bags.  I enjoy recipes with grapes in them.  I love the traditional Waldorf salad, and I've picked up two new recipes to fix this week. When grapes are on sale it's a good time to plan a couple quick and easy meals that are fresh and affordable with your coupon stockpile.

Grapes #1  Waldorf Salad
This is simple, yet evreytime I fix it up I feel like we're having a nice meal.  Mix your dressing ingredients first, then pour over the other ingredients. 
  • 1/2 cup chopped, slightly toasted walnuts
  • 1/2 cup celery, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup red seedless grapes, sliced  On sale this week at County Market
  • 1 sweet apple, cored and chopped
  • 3 Tbsp mayonnaise   Use Hellmann's from our special coupon last week. 
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice   Use on box coupon to save $1 on 1 True Lemon 
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Lettuce
Grapes #2  Grapes Galore

  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened 
  • 1 cup (8 oz) sour cream Save with printable coupons from Prairie Farms .com
  • 1/3 cup sugar   CH on sale this week, plus use newspaper coupon  to save $.40 on 2 
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 
  •  2 pounds seedless red grapes On sale this week at County Market
  •  2 pounds seedless green grapes On sale this week at County Market
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar CH on sale this week, plus use newspaper coupon  to save $.40 on 2
  •  3 tablespoons chopped pecans

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, sour cream, sugar and vanilla until blended. Add grapes and toss to coat.

 Grapes #3  Chicken Roll Ups

  • 4 cups chopped Chicken breast   Use Newspaper coupon to save $1 on 2 Hormel Chicken Breast
  • 2 cups red seedless grapes, halved On sale this week at County Market
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise salt and ground black pepper to taste  Use Hellmann's from our special coupon last week.
  •  4 flour tortillas 
  • 4 large fresh spinach leaves

 Lightly mix the Chicken,  grapes, Parmesan cheese, and mayonnaise in a bowl until well combined. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Place the 4 tortillas out onto a work surface. Spoon 1/4 of the turkey filling into each spinach leaf, in a line. Fold up the bottom of each tortilla to hold the filling, then wrap tightly. Leave the tops open. It's a great alternative to PB and J this summer.  Simple and easy.

My Daughter Teaches A Coupon Lesson



True story.  I made a chore chart for my kids.  I thought I’d teach them responsibility this summer.  Each chore has a corresponding reward for a job well done.  $2 or $3 for tougher jobs.  My 7 year old thought this was wonderful for the first few weeks of summer.  She’d earn enough money to buy a small toy she had been eyeballing each Friday on pay day.  This past week, she said, “I’m not going to be doing all these jobs anymore, “  I was surprised to hear this.  She went on, “I’ve decided I’ll do a few, then just get a coupon off the internet so I don’t have to work so hard.”  


I have taught my children a lesson!  Why pay $10 for a toy if you can use a coupon and only pay $5?  Especially if couponing is that easy?  This seems like a good topic to discuss at our club meetings this week too.  Many coupon users will clip from the newspaper, and shop the sales, but do not see the big coupon picture.  There are thousands of coupons at your finger tips.  You can save more of your money, and get the things you want buy finding the right coupons and using them every time.  


Follow these steps:
1. Identify what you want to buy.  What is the one thing you’ve been wanting, but have been reluctant to purchase?  Search for that coupon specifically online.
2. Search for a free coupon off printable sites.  Use the Coupon Database to find it faster.  If there is no lisitng, check the company website.  The coupons may be “off” for that brand at this particular time, and maybe coming up again soon. Send them an email to ask.
3. Join their home mailer program to get the coupon by mail.  Just a simple sign up form is usually available online.  If not, send a nice email requesting a mailed coupon. 
4. Utilize coupon services.  The clippers will get you what you need.  If you’re buying coupons, take a look at the items you need long term.  Like trash bags, or peanut butter.  Stock up when you know you’ll save money.
5. Now take a look at the things you regularly buy, and pay full price to get.  Yes, even the best coupon users have something they love and do not have a coupon to get.  Request one!  Look for a rebate that would include this item, or ask your club members if they have any tips on buying that item.
6. Always look for long term food deals.  Items with a longer shelf life can fill in a meal in a pinch.  Canned fruit, frozen rolls, or even boxed side dishes can help you to feed the family for less.
7. Finally, forget the groceries!  Take a look at all the things you plan to buy.  Can you get a coupon to help with that purchase?  A new garden sprinkler, tennis shoes, or a toy?  All money saved helps.  Think outside the grocery store this week and apply a child’s logic to your shopping.

Cookin with Coupons

Fresh ingredients make the best side dishes this summer.  Using your coupons to make those dishes quick easy and affordable makes it fun.  Here are three coupon savvy sides you can whip up this week.  Take advantage of the produce sales at County Market to complete your meal plan. 

Side #1  Cabbage and Apple Salad
I simply do not include cabbage enough in my meals.  It's a very inexpensive ingredient and I should try to prepare with it more.  Partly because my first thought of cabbage is a boiling pot of steamed leaves with little taste.  This recipe I tried last week and it has a lot of flavor, and some sweetness.  It's kid tested and approved.

  •     1/2 cup Marzetti Simply Dressed Coleslaw Salad Dressing   Use Newspaper coupon to save $1 on 2 
  •     6 cups chopped  cabbage, or 2 bags of Dole pre chopped mix,   Use Peelie coupon to save $2 on 2, it's a Dole coupon found on vidalia onions
  •     1 bunch scallions, chopped
  •     1 green bell pepper, seeds removed and diced
  •     2 large green  apples diced
  •     2 T Hormel bacon topping, when I just need a little, it's not worth cooking a batch!
  •     Salt and pepper, to taste
Simply mix it all up, add bacon to the top and enjoy.

Side #2  Broccoli and Peanut Salad
  • 1 cup Marzetti Original Slaw Dressing   Use Newspaper coupon to save $1 on 2 
  • 1 bag of Dole pre cut Cabbage shreds
  • 4 cups Broccoli, broken into small florets 
  • 1/2 cup Sun Maid raisins   Use Peelie coupon to save $.30 on 1
  •  3/4 cups Planters dry roasted peanuts   Save $1 on 1
  •  1/2 cup red onion, chopped 
  •  10 slices bacon, diced
  •  1/4 cup sugar 

 In mixing bowl, combine first six ingredients. In separate bowl, mix slaw dressing and sugar. Pour dressing mixture over vegetables and refrigerate several hours or overnight

Side #3  BLT Noodles
Love the whole BLT flavor combo, but I'm looking for ways to engage my kids into meals.  Noodles always help.  This is a pretty easy recipe, and you can sub in just about any noodle.

  • 1 bag NO Yolks  Egg Noodles  Save $1 on 2
  • 4T  Italian Dressing ,   Use Newspaper coupon to save $1 on 2 Newman's Own
  • 1 package of Cherry tomatoes, I cut these in quarters so the kids have no trouble eating them.
  • 1 lb of cooked bacon, diced (see notes below)
  • 1 head Romaine lettuce
  • salt and pepper 
  •  1/2 cup Parmesan cheese   Use Tearpad coupon to save $1 on 1  when buying with vegetables.

Routinely, I pick up 1 pound of County Market "Hotel" Bacon from the case each week. My butcher Jeff knows me and gets it ready when he sees me coming.   I found out a long time ago it's less expensive and less fatty than the packaged bacon.  To flavor it, I toss the bacon with black pepper and a dab of maple flavoring.  Cook the bacon and set aside.  Cook your noodles then rinse.  Now combine all ingredients in a large bowl and serve.
