Holiday Sales

Holiday week shopping is always a rush.  The store is packed with those shoppers who do not shop weekly.  They are fun to watch, they buy up full carts of one item each.  I often feel like I should say, “Psst...you could be saving more money if you planned a bit more.”

There are great in store deals that you can stock for the entire  summer.  Check out Lay’s Chips!  You can stock chips easy, you just need some seal tight boxes like Rubbermaids, or Sterlite.  Chips are an easy bring along snack, and at this week’s price, you can’t go wrong stocking for the next several months.  You’ll just need a good hiding place for all those easy to grab goodies.

You can always find places to not smash the chips.  Which places in your storage are do you use the least?  Yep, up there.  Chips are light weight and can easily store overhead.  Use bunge cords if you do not have boxes!  String some fishing line  from eyebolts and you have a ceiling shelf.  With this method, you can hide chips in places around the house that are often overlooked.  Check out the ceiling space in the hall closet, or the laundry room.

Holiday weeks also mean savings on picnic items.   Look for buns, condiments and drink mixes.  Don’t forget croutons, salad dressing, bbq, mayo, mustard, ketchup and vinegar.  Plan for the full 13 week summer for each item you buy.  Hot dogs for weiner roasts are a hit as well as lunchmeats.  My freezer will be filled with these quick road lunches.  Should we need a quick sandwich on the way to the ball game or something to pack for a day in St. Louis, we’re ready.

By planning these types of foods, you can use the rest of your weekly budgets to supplement your fresh meats and produce.  This week, I’ll buy mostly convenience food.  I’m hoping a nutritionalist is not in the lane next to me when I check out!  I can just imagine the looks.

Then for the next 8 weeks, I’ll be picking up grilling meats, and salad toppers.  We do like to eat fresh in the summer months.  By cutting back your overall expenditure NOW you’ll have more to spend later.  It’s fun to feel like you can splurge on some seafood or sweet corn when It’s in season.

If you “Save” yourself $10 for 13 weeks, you would be purchasing $130 in summer essentials this week.  Just remember you already spent that money as you move through the next weeks.  My budget is $85 per week before rebates, so I would spend, $215 this week (several checkouts so I can file multiple rebates, I’ll get at least $100 back), then only $75 per week the next 13 weeks.  I’ll file produce and meat rebates weekly.
Don’t forget all the ice cream, and popsicles you’ll be getting this summer.  By saving yourself 10% per week in future purchases, you’ll have that extra $12 a week for the frozen food treats for the kids.  Okay, for ourselves too!  If you have not picked up Stoneridge Creamery, try some!  It’s a store brand ice cream that is very good.  It’s become my families favorite.  I recommend the Berry Shortcake.
