How Much Did You Save?

Most people want to know, “ How much did you save?” when they meet me. I always smile and tell them it’s not the dollar amount that is important, but the percentage over time I save with my coupons.

When you are a new coupon shoppers it’s easy to get excited over saving $20 or $50 in a transaction. But the real savings occurs when you save 50% or more on all your purchases for a week or a month. It’s actually harder to keep your average percentage up than to save $1000.

We all get the big scores. The cases of salad dressing you get for free, or the shampoo that costs a mere quarter. Yet, in the very same week, we’ll have a transaction for $75 for our regular weekly groceries.

This week, take a few minutes to review your regular grocery items. Bread, milk, Cheese, meats, and produce. You can save 50% or more on these items over the next 26 weeks. Here’s how:

  1. Set a budget for your weekly consumables. Those items you buy only fresh. Don’t make excuses for the one that is difficult to save.
  2. Decide if you can stockpile any of the items. For example, Bread. You could buy multiple loaves of bread and freeze them if you had a hot price and coupon. Or, can you use produce keepers to extend your fresh produce life to 10 days instead of 6.
  3. Search for coupons that match the items on your regular consumables list. I buy Salad fixins. So I searched for coupons online for Produce, Salad, or Lettuce. I found several.
  4. Stock coupons for the items that are on the list. I didn’t just pick up 2 Bagged Salad coupons, but 13. That would be enough to help me save for my 26 week plan.
  5. Look for rebates that match these consumables. Cheese is a favorite I can freeze. I found a $15 Cheese rebate. Now I will do a separate transaction for just my Cheese so I can save the most, and get a rebate too.
Always look for Milk deals. Search cereal company offers that will help you save on dairy.
After you’ve taken these steps and can easily see your 50% savings. Challenge yourself. Move your goal up to 60%.
