First In - First Out

Keeping your stockpile fresh is very important. You will need to establish a system of First In First Out ( FIFO) food management. This method can be used in your pantry or cabinets. It should also include your fridge, freezer and canned goods.

It’s simple. Use what you first bought, first. You can sort your foods WHILE you put them away or the most time efficient handling. Use rolling racks for any canned goods like the one shown above. My racks are not so fancy, they are made of plywood, and I got the free plans online. Cost me a whopping $45 to build a rack that holds over 525 cans. You place the new can in the top, it rolls to the bottom to be used in the order it was stocked.

Boxed and shelved items are different. It’s a pain to have to unload everything on a shelf and put the new things behind the older food. A great way to solve this still requires moving but it is easier. Use two shelves, place the newest item on a bottom shelf and the older product on the eye level shelf. You’ll want to grab the items on the eye level shelf naturally.

Being a naturally LAZY coupon shopper, I will admit I also store my cereal by my own devised Push Along method. I place boxes on their side, and move them from Left to Right. I just use the one on the Right hand side of the shelf first. This works great for light weight items.
My freezer has a bottom for newest items and 4 large baskets on top for the oldest merchandise. Obviously, another way of moving the items within reach that I wish to use first.

My fridge is the worst! Too many salad dressing bottles get opened and not used up. So just this year we started a section for those rotations as well. Two shelves for rotation, and two on the door compartments. Whichever method you use, be sure to start as you begin your stockpiling. It will save you as much money to NOT waste as to use coupons.
