New barcodes coming soon!

The new coupon bar codes are due to be in effect by the end of this month. That will mean some changes for coupon shoppers. The changes will affect County Market just a little.

The biggest change you will see will be that the cashier will need to manually put in each coupon until all of our registers have been updated. The updates will be complete around mid February. In order for us to accept coupons from January 1 until completion, the cashiers will need to be putting in the scan codes.

You should not feel that they are scrutinizing your coupons! It will just be taking them longer to enter them. Please be patient with them.

The other anticipated changes are that the National Coupon Association has created these new codes to be variety specific. No longer will most coupons cover 10-12 types of items. You will need to read the offer carefully. For example, a coupon may say “This coupon is good for Kraft Philly Cream cheese with herbs” That coupon will no longer work on a large category of Philly products, but for that variety that is listed only. On the flip side, you may have a General Mills coupon that reads “This coupon good on any GM cereal” and it will be programmed to work on all. The writing will be key to knowing how the offers will work.

The Coupon Association made these changes to stop coupon fraud. It is considered fraud to use a coupon for a product that it was not intended to accepted on. The old system would only allow manufacturers a certain amount of codes. Some couponers were learning that they “Worked” on products not listed. They would clear, but that was not what the manufacturer intended. This new system will keep that from happening.

These new codes will be a learning curve for all of us. Please share at your coupon club your experiences when using the new coupons. We will all have to learn the “intentions” of each manufacturer to know how to best use the offers.
