Order up!

In teaching classes last month, I was asked one question more than any other, “Where should I store my (Fill in blank)?”  Stockpiling naturally leads to organizing and rotation.  Keeping food not only organized, but free from pests and pets is key.

Two places often over looked for food storage are above your head, and below your feet.  We tend to squeeze every inch of space at eye level and forget we even have the other space.
Let’s start below.  Can any of your shelving units or cabinets be raised?  What about tables, furniture, or beds?  You can pick up in expensive risers for any legged furniture and add some “Pull Out” boxes.  This works well for canned or boxed goods.  Do you have pans stored in a cabinet with quite a bit of head space above the pans?  Can you add in a half shelf?  A half shelf will allow you to place goods to the back of the cabinet, yet up and out of the way.  These are great for extra cooking oils, or jugs.

Don’t forget your guest room, hall closet and office space.  Use any under bed, under furniture and cabinet head spaces as well.  Above is overlooked the most.  I tend to shy away from overhead racks because I envision myself needing those goods more often than I actually do.  If you have stocked over a 6 month supply, then you will not need those good for 180 days.

Handyman magazine has many simple to use overhead racks to build.  Have you seen the ones where you create an “I” and slide any plastic boxes into grooves?  All you need are some 1x2’s from the home improvement store, screws and any sterlite or plastic boxing with lids.  Space your I’s so that you fit your boxes.  You can literally put any goods you want over head.  Most do it yourself magazines show the HUGE storage totes with heavy goods hanging in your garage.  Think a bit smaller and lighter for you to store chips, cereal, sauce packets bottles of spices, and baking goods.  Better yet, can you move any eye level items OUT of your cabinets, like cookie cutters, Cupcake decorating supplies, pie pans, or bbq tools?  Those and seasonal items can  easily stash overhead and give you more room for food at eye level.

Panty ceilings are good for these units, as well as hall closets, bedroom closets and bathrooms.  Yes, I said bathrooms.  Put shampoo, razors, even extra TP up and out of the way.  Buy coordinating colored boxes and remember to label them on the BOTTOM so you will know what is inside.
I’m hosting a contest!  Send me your creative storage solutions for your stockpiles.  I’m  going to be giving away gift cards now through June 30th.  One storage winner per week.  To enter, I need a photo and a description.  Let’s get creative and find some new storage solutions.   Photos will be shared online and in Clip Notes.
