Saving with Meats--Whole Pork Loin

Saving money is something that takes many forms.  For our family, saving in the meat department is something we're always looking to do.  This week we have a grand opportunity to do just that, save in the meat department.  It's time to grab a couple whole pork loins and plan several meals.

We are looking at the $1.77 pork loin sale.  Wow, an entire pork loin for $15?  That is fantastic.  The key to buying a pork loin is knowing what to do with it.  At our house, we immediately chop it up and create a meal plan.  We start with the tip and make stew meats or stirfry meats.  Next are loin chops for the bbq, then a roast, followed buy some thicker chops, and finally, breakfast or tenderloin chops.
We try to see how many meals we can get out of one loin chop, our max number is 17, including many tenderloin chops. Here's a great cutting tutorial that will give you some ideas on what to do with your loin.  I love his butterfly chop tip.

6 Insanely Simple Ways to Coupon Shop

Saving money on groceries does not happen at the store.  Saving money happens before you get to the store.  Here are six steps to help you be fully prepared to maximize your savings.

1.  Make your grocery list.  You list should include all the regular  items your family craves, and the items you will need to make meals this week.  The items you have on your list each week are considered your HOT LIST items.  These should be items you trade coupons for on message boards and ask for from manufacturers direct.

2.  Look at the weekly ad.  Its easy to find the weekly ad, it's here every week.  You just look it over for those items that are on sale that will make meal planning easy and save you some money.  There are about 175 items on sale each week and we list the full ad on My County Market and the coupon match up on County Market Coupon News.

3.  Go through your clipped coupons.   If you see spaghetti sauce on sale, it may be time to redeem that pasta coupon.  Look for good meal planning matches to your shopping list and the weekly sale.

4.  Open up your apps.  The  My County Market App  will have 30-40 items where you can make matches and save additional money.  Plus it has the coupon wallet feature where you can see your savings adding up.  Next, open   Ibotta app for rebates  it has additional money you can use on top of manufacturer's coupons.

5.  Use the Penny Pincher booklet!  It's full of deals that also offer stacked savings.  These are County Market store coupons so you can use this coupon and a manufactuer's coupon on the same product.  Penny Pincher coupon booklets are delivered inside your month price shopper in your mailbox.  

6.  Pack up your coupon stash and bring it along.  You may find non advertised deals in store and want to make a last minute addition to your cart.  If your coupon organizer is at home, you'll miss out on a deal. It never hurts to be fully prepared.

Coupon Preps

Learning to coupon shop can be frustrating.  You hear all kinds of tips and tricks, and see other people with carts full of groceries for huge discounts.  You'll want to fast forward and become an

expert in a week, but it's confusing and disorganized to do so.

Many new couponers spend a lot of time getting to know the terms and clipping coupons they will never use.  All that time adds up to dirty dishes, unfolded laundry, and TV shows missed!  You can streamline the time spent sorting and cutting pretty easily.

Here is what I do each week:

On Tuesday mornings, I find 15 minutes to check the weekly sale a day early.  This extra day allows me to order any special coupons I want for the week.  It also allows me to print coupons before everyone else looks at their store lists.  I go to My County Market Weekly Sales.  It is posted by 9am on Tuesdays.

Step 2:  I print coupons off all my favorite cheap and easy sites.  These include Coupons.com PrairieFarms.com Bettycrocker.com Campbells.com Kelloggs.com  These are the standard sites with the most coupons.

Step 3:  I go to any sites that have a sale item that I think sometimes has coupons, like Arm & Hammer P&G Old Orchard Coffeemate

Step 4:  I start looking at Hot Coupon World database for any coupons I may have missed.  I type in any food item I want a coupon for and see if it's listed in newspaper coupons.

***This is a time saver:  If it lists a newspaper insert coupon, look at the date of issue, then pull the insert out of your insert pile and cut it.  Don't cut every coupon all the time.  Just when you need it. no more spending an hour a week cutting coupons you will never use.

Step 5:  While looking at the inserts, if there is an item I want go ahead and cut it.  I know I'll use it before expiration.

Step 6:  Put these coupons with my Penny Pinchers organized by layout of the store.  In My store:  Produce, branded Meat, condiments, canned veg, ethnic foods, baking, cereal, cleaning, dairy, breads, frozen.  Pretty simple.

These steps will help you to not get caught up in the time trap.  Don't clip what you won't use.  Don't have 200 extra coupons in hand while shopping, and Don't worry about missing 1 coupon.  Grab the main deals each week and be happy saving dollars and not pennies.

Holiday to Holiday Stock Ups with Coupons

There are some weeks during the year that it makes sense to coupon more.  These weeks are the ones where the store has huge sales.  Holiday weeks are the best!  During holiday weeks, the store will run deep discounts on the most popular items for that holiday.  This week is perfect for stocking up many items, even everyday items.

Coupon shoppers are always looking for the "double dip."  They want to have a discount from the store, and a discount from the manufactuer at the same time.  When this occurs, a coupon shopper will see 50% savings on the goods.  A standard coupon is usually 25% of the cost of a product, and a good sale is usually 25% cost reduction on the price of the product.

During a special sale week, like during a holiday week, we often see a higher discount on the products.  If the store gives a 30-35% discount, and we use a 25% coupon value, we will see higher than average savings.  So this is the time to stock up on those items our families love.

This is also a good time to take a look at everyday items and really plan out how many you can stock up before the next big sale.  Items like condiments, or main cooking ingredients that are shelf stable.  Olives, pimentos, sugar, dried spices, and paper goods top the list of everyday items that go on sale during holiday weeks.

The very best coupon shoppers will order some coupons a week before the holdiay sale week, then they will have the highest chance of making good matches.  It's not hard to predict what will be on sale, just look at an ad from last year.  The internet has lots of sale flyers posted on many boards from last year. Take a look at the brands and plan accordingly.  The prices will probably change, but you can bet on hamburgers for the 4th of July, and pumpkin pie filling for Thanksgiving.  Count on shimp for New Years, and  Cool whip for Christmas.

Our family knows that we make holiday weeks a double shop week.  We have our usual weekly grocery shopping, and we then shop extra for the upcoming weeks while the prices are low and the coupons are heavy.  Planning your 'Holiday to Holiday" shopping will save you money, and you will have a much fuller cabinet for the next several weeks at home.

Teaching the Family About Time and Coupons

We have been coupon shoppers for many years.  We started clipping back when my third child was born, and I decided to stay home with the kids.  That was an interesting time in my life!  The babies were filling my days with joy and chores, and it didn't take too long to realize that no one was filling my wallet anymore.

Once we got used to the new budget, we knew something had to change with our grocery shopping.  As I started looking into coupons I was immediately discouraged.  I remember going to my computer and searching for our favorite brands.  Most of what I typed into the search bar showed no coupons.  I couldn't figure out how coupon users really made it happen.

Couponing is not fast.  It seems like it should be a fast thing.  See a coupon, clip, claim, that's it.  Yet couponing is about planning, waiting, and securing your deals in a smart way.  It takes a good 90 days to feel like you are actually saving money.  Yes, there are those rare deals where you know you're buying baby food, and you suddenly have an awesome Beechnut coupon and Beechnut sale.  True savings, are about saving on all your groceries, not just a few items.

Now, I generally will use 20 savings coupons in a transaction.  Sometimes, it's more coupons, sometimes it's less. I never shop without saving 25%, and I try to save 50% on my entire cart.  At this point, I'm sure you're wanting to know what changed.  It was just time.  Your favorite brand may not be in this week's paper, on online this week, or on sale in the store this week.  It takes a bit of time to figure out what your "hot list" of brands includes, and then watch and wait for the coupon and the sale.

Time allows you to pick up multiples when you see a sale, and pick up multiples if there is a smoking hot sale.  Time also allows you to keep track of pricing.  You will need time to teach your self and your family about being patient, and planning out your meals and even snacks.  When you are buying a 3 month supply of ice cream, believe me, the whole family has to be on board and know how to ration those cones.

7 Summer Coupon Tips

Couponing in the summer months is a mixed joy. There are tons of great offers for picnic foods, and convenience foods.  These can add up to quite a bit of money.  These are also temptations!  Especially for kids.  And since we're talking about kids, they are out for the summer and can really mess up your shopping plan.  Not only do they eat more in the summer months, but they tend to be along for the shopping since school is out.

Summer coupon shopping can run a bit smoother with some tips.

1.  Make your grocery list before you hit the store.  It will allow you to cut down on impulse buys and stick to a plan.  Check your sale ad before you go, and gather all your printed and phone offers before you hit the store.  Sales Ad Preview

2.  Use the Tuesday preview options for sales flyers and deals.  If you have that day to do your planning you will also have time to gather those hot or hard to find coupons online.

3.  Try to have tasks for your kids while shopping.  This will keep them occupied and busy so they are not adding items to your cart. An easy task is to ask them to find two products, maybe a Kellogg's cereal and a General Mills cereal and tell you which is the better buy.  It will take them awhile to check prices and sizes.

4.   Order extra inserts.  You can order newspaper inserts online.  These are full not cut coupons that you can use over several weeks.  Having a full coupon stash helps you to be ready when you need the savings.  Online inserts

5.  Load your phone up with all the important phone apps! 7.  Plan to extend your food supply.  Use your cabinets to the max, your freezer space, and stock up on the loss leaders of summer.  Food is cheaper!  So plan to buy your weekly groceries, and a few staples for later.  It may not seem like a lot of money, but $15 worth of staples picked up a half off the regular price means you have $360 worth of foods in the fall ready to go.

BOGO Berries are back

It's my favorite sale of the year!  I love the BOGO berries.  It's not just great because it inclues blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries.  It is fantastic because of all the things you can do with these berries.

My menu planning around berries is extensive.  I always get two of every berry with the coupons from the weekly ad.  Then i start making my menu up.  Most of the berries will be eaten fresh, a few will go into smoothie packs.

Our family loves having fruit at breakfast and with salads.  We'll have some over night oats in the fridge.  Then we'll make up some fresh pancakes with berries on top. Let's not forget a fresh omelet for the weekend with a berry medley on the side.  We love our breakfast berries.

Then we move on to the salads.  A nice vinegarette dressing, or a poppy seed, will make any salad good with berries.  Pick up some romaine lettuce, add some chopped pecans, maybe some mandarin oranges or a cut apple and top with berries.  Yum!

You are limited on the per transaction of berries, but you can shop more than once this week.  I'll probably pop back into the store at the week's end for more fresh BOGO berries.
