Definition of Saving

Being at live coupon classes and events gives me a chance to hear just what customers are thinking.  One lady said to me, “I am so tired of doing without.   I need to find another way to save.”  Doing without.  To me there is no place in coupon shopping for omitting what I really want.

What do most people think of when they find out we coupon shop?  That we are “frugal,” “Tight with our wallets, “or that we have empty houses with nothing on the cupboard shelves?  My definition of saving money has nothing to do with sacrificing.

My cart is every bit as full as the next customer. I just find  someone else’s currency to pay for my order.  That person is the Manufacturer.  To me, a coupon is an extra discount for buying their product.  Its often a bonus for buying two or more at a time.

Coupons work just like good old green cash.  We pay with it and it takes dollars off our weekly bill.  It’s the best way to save money.  We are still getting the groceries we want, just being creative in paying for them.

This particular lady, had been couponing in what I describe as stage one couponing.  That is when you see a coupon by happenstance, clip it and then use it the very next time you get to the store.  She did pick up coupons in the newspaper when she remembered to get a paper, and she had been online to print a few coupons.  In order for her to really save money, she needed to move on to stage two:  Matching.

When she learned about matching she immediately understood why as coupon users we have plenty of goods in our kitchens.  Matching up the sale price gives you a discount from the store, and the manufacturer gives you a discount on the product as well. Two discounts from two different pockets other than your own.  That is the main goal of coupon shopping.  In order to do this well, we have to be loyal to coupon shopping, and build up a coupon stash.

To build up your coupon stash, you’ll always have many coupon coming in and going out.  Plan to use about 20% of the coupons you collect.  You’ll just naturally accumulate extra ones that may never go on sale before they expire, that you simply forget about, or that you don’t want at all.

This is why we have free coupon clubs that meet at our stores.  So you can get together with others and share your unwanted coupons.  Coupon bins are placed in all of our stores too.  So that our customers can work together to find more coupons matching the items they want to purchase.  No more doing without!

This week, each of us have a goal to increase our coupon stash.  I’m putting some printable links up on the blog or easy printing.  Also look locally for places to pick up more coupons.
